Questions to ask yourself 1st:
Firstly you need to identify the 'site':
*Where is the Mural to be painted, on an Indoor or Outdoor wall, a piece of furniture or object. Or maybe on a piece of MDF/Plywood so you can 'move' to a new location in time if you choose to do so.
*Identifying the site is the 1st step in preparation for your Mural.
*What condition is the wall in?
*Has the wall been painted previously & how long ago?
*Is the surface area free from dirt & debris (flaked paint)?
*What type of access is available to the site?

Interior Wall Preparation:Ensure your wall surface is clean of debris & has no holes or patches of scuffed/chipped/flaking paint or wallpaper. A light wash with sugar soap can be used internally if debris is excessive.
A fresh coat of quality interior paint on the surface you wish your mural to be painted on will ensure a long lasting quality mural that you can enjoy for years to come. A safe work area is required, free of furniture & obstacles is a must. Your artist will advise of any other measures (if needed) that will need to be done prior to the commence of mural work. |
Exterior Wall Preparation:Ensure your wall surface is clean of debris & has no holes or patches of scuffed/chipped/flaking paint. Exterior walls can be washed down & scrubbed with sugar soap to remove unwanted debris.
A fresh coat of quality exterior paint on the surface you wish your mural to be painted on will ensure a long lasting quality mural that you can enjoy for years to come. If the wall is concrete of metal & hasnt previously been painted, an undercoat is not required but would be beneficial. A safe work area is required, access to the site is to be free of obstacles & where necessary scaffolding is to be errected (see above for heights). Your artist will advise of any other measures (if needed) that will need to be done prior to the commence of mural work. |
Furniture/Object Preparation:Where murals are to be painted onto objects or furniture, the artist will give you an account on site at time of consultation.
Most objects that are transportable will be taken away & painted back in the workshop. Thus ensuring a quicker completion of the mural. Sometimes on-site painting is required where the mural has an on-flowing effect from the wall art onto the object/furniture piece. Your artist will advise of all measures that will need to be completed prior to the commence of mural work. |
'Detatchable' Wall Preparation:Where a mural is to be painted onto a 'detachable' surface, firstly you as the client will need to (or have a professional) size up, cut into shape & attach any wall fixings prior to commencement of work.
As per 'interior/exterior' wall preparations you will be required to apply an appropriate undercoat to the surface of the piece to be painted. Detachable wall art is generally done at the work shop (with some exceptions). Your artist will advise of all measures that will need to be completed prior to the commence of mural work. |
Site Accessability:Most sites are easily accessed either directly by foot or by the use of small step ladders. However, some sites where needing to reach over 2.5 metres, a scaffold system will need to be put in place.
Any scaffolding required to complete a job will be the clients responsibility to organise and it will also be at the clients expense. Areas likely needing scaffolds include ceilings, interior and exterior wall in excess of 2.5 metres high or areas where access is dangerous for the artist to paint there without the use of a secure scaffolding system in place, examples of dangerous areas include over swimming pools and on some staircases. All sites will be assessed at time of consult and our artist will inform you if scaffolding will be required. |
